[Violinist Bronislaw Huberman, New York]
Date1941-45
Label Text
Polish-born Jewish violinst, Bronislaw Huberman, founded the Palestine Symphony Orchestra in 1936 (it was renamed the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in 1948). He invited legendary Italian conductor, Arturo Toscanini - who had refused to perform in German in protest of the Nazi regime - to conduct the Palestine Symphony’s inaugural concert in Tel Aviv on December 26, 1936. Huberman recruited many of Europe’s leading Jewish musicians to join the Palestine Symphony, which ultimately provided refuge for nearly 1,000 European Jews.
In 1937, Huberman left Austria and moved to Switzerland. He was touring South Africa when the Second World War started, and was unable to return home until after the war. Vishniac photographed him in New York during this period, when he was traveling and concertizing but could not return to Europe. He died in Switzerland in 1947 at age 64.
