This was one of three inaugural exhibitions at the newly founded International Center of Photography located at 1130 Fifth Avenue at 94th Street. The other exhibitions were Apropos USSR (1954–1973): Henri Cartier-Bresson and another group exhibition entitled The Eye of the Beholder.

Classics of Documentary Photography
This exhibition of the work of six photographers explores the humanistic tradition in photography as established by the documentary photographer Lewis W. Hine. Werner Bischof, Robert Capa, David Seymour “Chim”, Lewis W. Hine, Roman Vishniac, and David Weiner.
