Vishniac befriended Henryk Schwartz, a cantor and traveling salesman from Mukacevo, during his numerous visits to the town. Schwartz acted as Vishniac’s guide, helping him gain access to nearby villages and introducing him to the important rabbis and religious figures in Mukacevo. Most of Schwartz’s family perished during the Holocaust; he survived and immigrated to Israel.
