    Vishniac documented the lives and experiences of workers, especially craftsmen and manual laborers, throughout his career. The subject of this photograph, a chimney sweep, would have been immediately recognizable to a German audience as a symbol of good luck, an image that was often used on New Year’s greetings cards.
