In May 1939, Mara Vishniac, age thirteen, was sent to a school for German Jewish refugee youth in Västraby, located in the south of Sweden, where this photograph was taken. In 1940, Mara and Wolf joined Luta at her Stockholm apartment, where they awaited American visas for the family to immigrate to the U.S.
